Nurse educators at Cincinnati Children’s have pioneered an innovative interprofessional Grand Rounds model, stemming from their efforts to combat Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI). This initiative emerged from CLABSI education sessions that, despite positive feedback, faced challenges with low attendance.

Recognizing the interprofessional nature of CLABSI prevention, the CLABSI Prevention Education Team envisioned a broader audience, akin to Nursing Grand Rounds but for CLABSI prevention and interprofessional. This concept evolved into a comprehensive harm prevention initiative.

Conceptualization and Implementation

The team expanded its focus to include various harm prevention topics relevant to multiple healthcare professions such as respiratory therapy with unplanned extubation, social work and human trafficking, and de-escalation techniques in behavioral medicine.

Significance of Interprofessional Education

Interprofessional education is crucial for effective harm prevention, enhancing patient outcomes by reducing drug reactions, medical errors, and healthcare-associated conditions. Coordinated care also reduces frustration among healthcare providers and patients, leading to significant cost savings.

Professional Development and Collaborative Efforts

Engagement in interprofessional teams promotes mutual learning, enhancing skills and knowledge, and fostering professional growth. This continuous learning environment elevates the quality of care delivered.

Future Directions

The CLABSI Prevention Education Team's innovative approach aims to revolutionize harm prevention education, enhance patient outcomes, promote professional development, and create a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.
